Green Globe announced re-certification of the Cinnamon Lakeside Hotel Colombo in Sri Lanka. Since the initial onsite audit two years ago, this luxury property implemented a number of improvements and has continuously demonstrated leadership in sustainable tourism and corporate social responsibility.

“At Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo, we firmly believe that creating awareness is the key to strengthening green initiatives,” said Denis Gruhier, General Manager at the Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo, “We are very proud to earn the prestigious Green Globe Certification for the third year in a row, and we aim to continue our close involvement with the local community, enhancing the John Keells leisure sector’s pledge ‘I Will Care.’ Associates of our hotel actively volunteer to participate in CSR (corporate social responsibility) projects embracing all four major ethnicities prevalent in this country, as we are dedicated to support ethnic harmony. Our recent CSR projects include assistance in the restoration of the historic Abeygiriya Temple, St. Anne’s Church, Ayeshwariya Lakshmi Amman Kovil, and the Galloluwa Jumma Mosque in Minuwangoda. We are a member of the local green sustainable business program in the region.”

A long-term sustainability management system is in effect at the Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo; energy and water usage is strictly monitored. Guest rooms are equipped with water-efficient, dual-flush toilets and water-saving showers and faucets. All chemicals used on the property by kitchens, housekeeping, and laundry are biodegradable. Furthermore, the property implemented collateral on energy and water conservation, waste management, and cultural etiquette that should be observed when visiting local communities and historical or religious sites. Local culture is promoted through “Hopper Nights,” which feature traditional Sri Lankan cuisine and entertainment. During key cultural celebrations, the hotel offers kids’ craft events and festivals.

The hotel separates all waste, which is sent for reuse or recycling, including e-waste. Food waste is donated to a local piggery, while all garden waste is composted and reused as fertilizer at the property’s roof-top vegetable and herb garden. Eco-friendly products are being purchased where possible, local suppliers adhering to sustainable practices are given preference. Take-back and packaging minimization policies are in place, and all procedures are reviewed on a regular basis to continually improve performance.

Green Globe Certification’s CEO, Guido Bauer, commented: “We are very pleased to award the re-certification to the Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo. This property shows outstanding efforts in their dedication to protect the environment and creating awareness amongst staff and customers. Employees are frequently trained on all relevant aspects of sustainability, including water and energy consumption, and waste management. The Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo leads the way in sustainable tourism in Sri Lanka.” For more information please watch the Cinnamon Lakeside video on Green Globe’s youtube channel: mygreenglobe.com.
